Highland Wedding Photographer

"Debbie was quite simply one of the kindest people we met throughout the whole wedding process. She made us feel completely comfortable and at ease, and having her there felt less like having a photographer and more like having another member of the family with us. Debbie's talent, warmth, professionalism and genuine care are second to none. Looking back through our photos brings all the emotions of the day flooding back, and we are so grateful that she captured it all so beautifully."

If you are a laid back couple in love who are planning something small and meaningful, it would be lovely to be considered for your day.

My name is Debbie Thornton and I shoot natural and relaxed photography for couples planning small weddings and elopements over the Scottish Highland area. I have been photographing weddings since 2009 and have witnessed the most incredibly touching and heartfelt ceremonies. To me, less is more. I offer photography for couples who aren’t looking for direction, who are completely comfortable with each other and are planning something small and meaningful to them. As a Highland wedding photographer, I’m simply there with my camera to document your day in a laid-back way, while you both soak up the landscape and all the beautiful moments along the way.

Eloping in the Highlands

The Highlands really speak for themselves when it comes to choosing a beautiful place to hold your ceremony. There are so many different places to get married or elope here. Some of my personal favourite locations are in Wester Ross, Assynt and Caithness, though it’s all beautiful, really. It’s such a huge area, with so much to explore.

Wester Ross has Torridon, with its stunning mountain landscapes. Assynt has Achmelvich Bay and its beautiful coastline, and Caithness is home to one of my favourite venues, The House of the Northern Gate.

A relaxed kind of wedding day

The small weddings and elopements I photograph here in the Highlands tend to feel really relaxed because couples just go with whatever the day brings. If it’s raining, they don’t mind; they still want to have their ceremony outside. Some like to have a backup location in case there’s a storm or the weather really turns, but nine times out of ten, they just go for it, whatever the weather.

I’m not the type of photographer who worries about getting my equipment wet, so if you’re happy to go for it, I’ll be right there with you to document it all.

Rather than following a fixed schedule, plan your day around what feels right for you both, whether that means staying in one place or visiting a couple of nearby locations. The couples I photograph are completely in love and just want to be together, soaking up the landscape. Their day is about them and no one else. It’s about being completely present with each other in this stunning Highland landscape.

I just happen to be there with my camera, never directing your day, just going with your flow.
